This is the first page of text in volume 1 of the 1851 George P. Putnam First Edition, Version 3. It features an epigraph taken from Longfellow's "It Is Not Always May." The Wide, Wide World is at the top of the page in all capitals, with a decorative rule under it.  Chapter 1 follows the decorative rule, with the epigraph and text under it.

This chapter title page in 1851 George Palmer Putnam 1st Edition, Vol. 2 shows the epigraph, "As bees flee hame wi' lades o' treasure,/ The minutes winged their way wi' pleasure./ Kings may be blest, but they were glorious,/ O'er all the ills o' life victorious. BURNS." This was taken from the poem, "Tam o'Shanter," by Robert Burns.

George Palmer Putnam used this first page of text in the 1st edition, Vol. 1 and included the epigraph:

"Enjoy the spring of love and youth,

   To some good angel leave the rest,

For time will teach thee soon the truth,

   'There are no birds in last year's nest.'

                                           LONGFELLOW."

This page 1 of "Contents of Chapters" for 1851 George Palmer Putnam's 1st Edition, Vol. 1 of the Wide Wide World denotes this as "Volume I." It then lists the chapters with roman numerals, the chapter's title and which page number each chapter starts on, connected to the title by a series of dots.

George P. Putnam included this Table of Contents in the second volume of their 1851 edition of The Wide, Wide World.  This page is the first page of the Table of Contents for this edition and lists the first 19 chapters.
