This black and white frontispiece, of the [1907] Grosset & Dunlap reprint, depicts Mr. Van Brunt scolding Aunt Fortune for her treatment of Ellen. In the illustration, Mr. Van Brunt is walking out the door as Ellen looks down while clutching the skirt of her dress and Aunt Fortune watches him leave with crossed arms. A caption below the illustration reads, "'Thank you, ma'am, I've heard enough," said that gentleman" The scene depicted in this illustration is on page 183 of the novel.

In the illustration, Ellen, wearing a dress and bonnet, stands unsteadily on a log as she reaches out toward Nancy, trying to regain her balance as she attempts to reach the other side of the brook. Nancy, who is turned away from the viewer, reaches out to Ellen as if to help her. Foliage surrounds Nancy and an open field extends behind Ellen into the distance. A caption below the illustration describes the scene from page 127 and reads, "Slowly and fearfully and with as much care as possible," conveying Ellen's anxiety as she attempts to cross the brook.
