The illustration first appeared without color in James Nisbet's 1853 Author's Edition (see 3WIS). The caption to the image reads "The Joyful News" with a reference to page 254. The image depicts Ellen sitting on a stool and reading to her elderly grandmother, further illustrating her meek and generous nature. The scene is set in Aunt Fortune's home, with warm, domestic colors.
