An open valley with several trees and mountains in the distance extends behind them. Ellen rides side-saddle and raises her finger as if she is speaking as Alice looks up at her. Alice's hair extends behind her as if being blown by the wind, establishing a sense of movement in the illustration. This illustration first appeared in the 1853 James Nisbet and Co.
