Description

This color aquatint frontispiece appearing in the [1918] Humphrey Milford/Oxford University Press Reprint, depicts Alice and Ellen on The Cat's Back. Alice and Ellen sit on a rock on The Cat's Back. Alice wears a bonnet, a dark blue dress and wraps her left arm around Ellen, and points into the distance with the right. Ellen wears a light blue dress and leans forward slightly to be able to see the village Alice is pointing out to her. Mountains rise up in the background of the illustration. The gentle, flowing colors of the aquatint illustration give a sense of lightness to the scene as the figures are surrounded by a nature that blends together through the colorful movement of the illustration. The name of the illustrator is written in the bottom right corner of the illustration, and a caption below the illustration reads, "You see that little white village yonder?"
