A caption below the illustration quotes a sentence from page 11 and reads, "Looking round sometimes, as if to make sure that it was herself, and giving a little kind of satisfied neigh when he saw that it was," and conveys the closeness of Ellen and her horse. In the illustration, Ellen stands on a tree stump, wearing a straw hat and apron, and grabs The Brownie's reigns as she prepares to mount him. A dog sits in front of The Brownie looking up at Ellen. The right side of the illustration is framed by foliage while an open field extends into the background of the left side of the illustration.

Underneath the publisher is a simple zierrat followed by a bolded "CABINET EDITIONS OF THE POETS," with the subtitle "BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED WITH ENGRAVINGS ON STEEL." in a smaller font.
