This black and white illustration, appearing as the frontispiece to the [1903] Ward, Lock, and Co. Ltd. Complete edition reprint, depicts Alice finding Ellen on the Cat's Back. Ellen sits in the grass, laying across a rock, her hands pressed to her face, as Alice stands above her, leaning her hand against a rock as she looks down gently at Ellen. The outlines of several mountains rise up in the background and a budding branch reaches out over Ellen. A caption below the illustration quotes a sentence from page 129 and reads "Ellen was wrought up to the last pitch of grief," and conveys Ellen's despondency.

In the title page of Ward, Lock, and Co. Limited's 1903 edition of the novel, the title is printed in the page's top quarter followed by a period. The author's pseudonym Elizabeth Wetherell is printed below. An inscription taken from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's, "To a Child" appears in the page's middle. The novel is listed as a complete edition. Ward, Lock, and Co. Limited's address is listed as, "London, New York, and Melbourne."
