This black and white illustration, appearing on page 337 of the Hodder and Stoughton reprint, depicts Ellen and Mr. Van Brunt in the woods. Ellen stands holding a basket among the trees and grass of the woods as Mr. Van Brunt leans against his ax in the background with several chopped pieces of wood sitting near his feet. His two oxen stand near him as he gazes at Ellen, who looks around her, seemingly in awe of the natural beauty of the woods as she rests her hand on her chest.

This black and white illustration, appearing on page 375 of the 1896 Hodder and Stoughton reprint, depicts Ellen meeting The Brownie. Ellen stands next to Ellen Chauncey as Sophia Marshman watches Ellen from a distance. Thomas leads The Brownie to the front of the porch where Ellen can see him. Captain Parry, Alice's cat, stands near Ellen's feet. Several trees and bushes stand behind The Brownie, and an open field extends into the distance. The busyness in the foreground of the illustration, accentuated by the multiple characters appearing in the scene, is relieved by the landscape in the background as the scene opens up into nature.

This black and white illustration appearing on page 386, of the 1896 Hodder and Stoughton Reprint, depicts Mr. Van Brunt on the ground in a barn, injured, with Mrs. Van Brunt kneeling beside him, while Ellen enters the scene through the open barn door. Mrs. Van Brunt holds Mr. Van Brunt's hand to comfort him. In the right bottom corner of the illustration, a mother hen watches over her chicks.

This black and white illustration appearing on page 438, of the 1896 Hodder and Stoughton Reprint, depicts Alice's death bed, with Ellen weeping next to her. Alice's face is pale and serene, her eyes are open, and her right hand is lifted up as if to comfort Ellen. Ellen holds her left hand, while she covers her grief-stricken, shadowed face with her right hand. This illustration first appeared on page 438, of the 1892 J.B. Lippincott "New Edition", (see 9CIA).

This black and white illustration from page 467 of the 1896 Hodder and Stoughton Reprint depicts Ellen, Mrs. Forbes, and Mrs. Blockson sitting together in a circle, in front of a window. Ellen sits on the right side next to a table, where her hand hovers over an open book from which she had been reading aloud. Mrs. Forbes wears a white bonnet and a dark gown, and is leaning attentively towards Ellen with folded hands. This illustration first appeared on page 467, of the 1892 J.B. Lippincott "New Edition" (see 9CIA).

This black and white illustration appearing on page 483, of the 1896 Hodder and Stoughton reprint, depicts Ellen tending a garden in Scotland. In the illustration, Ellen stands leaning against a rake, her hand resting on a blooming branch. She looks away distractedly, and is wearing a gingham gown, a dark jacket, and plain straw brim hat. A tall fence stands behind her, blocking any view of the landscape beyond the tended garden. Several gardening pots and a watering can lie on the ground near Ellen's feet. This black and white illustration appearing on page 528, of the 1896 Hodder and Stoughton Reprint, depicts Ellen sitting slightly removed from a little table and looking outside a very large window over the estate. Her posture is slightly hunched, as if to convey that she is carrying a large, emotional burden. Her expression is wistful as she contemplates and compares her new life with the Lindsay's with her life in America. This illustration first appeared on page 528, of the 1892 J. B. Lippincott Co. "New Edition" Reprint (see 9CIA).

This black and white illustration appearing on page 545, of the 1896 Hodder and Stoughton Reprint, depicts Mr. Lindsay observing Ellen. A shadowed Mr. Lindsay stands in the doorway to a darkened room, where Ellen is sitting on the floor of the room, resting against the seat of a chair and looking out a window. She wears a pale dress, her fingers are laced on the seat cushion, and her glowing, yet melancholic face is turned towards the incoming light. Beneath the illustration is the caption "Mr. Lindsay stood still at the door," and Page 545. This illustration first appeared on page 544b of the 1892 J.B. Lippincott Co. "New Edition," Reprint (see 9CIA).

This black and white illustration appearing on page 560, of the 1896 Hodder and Stoughton Reprint, depicts Ellen reuniting with John in Scotland. In the illustration, Ellen and John are sitting on a sofa. Ellen's white dress is a stark contrast to John's dark suit. Ellen is resting her head on John's shoulder and John resting one of his hands on hers and his arm is around her shoulders. This illustration was first used on page 560 of the 1892 J.B. Lippincott Co. "New Edition" reprint (see 9CIA).
