This first page of text from the 1853 Charles H. Clarke and Samuel O. Beeton begins with the title of the novel at approximately 1/4 down the page. Underneath appears a simple zierrat which then leads to the Chapter number. Underneath the chapter is an excerpt from Longfellow's "It Is Not Always May":

"Enjoy the spring of love and youth

    To some good angel leave the rest,

For time will teach thee soon the truth,

    'There are no birds in last year's nest.'

                                           LONGFELLOW."

This is the first page of text in the [1853] Clarke, Beeton, & Co. reprint, version 1. The title of the book appears approximately 1/4 down the page. Underneath the title is a plain zierrat which separates the book title from "CHAPTER I". Underneath the chapter is the last verse from Longfellow's "It is not Always May". Below the poem is where the chapter starts.

This first page of text in the 1867 Milner & Sowerby "The Wide, Wide World Library" Reprint does not have an epigraph. The text is small.

This is the first page of text in the [1874] William Nicholson & Sons, S.D. Ewins & Co. Reprint. The Wide, Wide World is written at the top of the page, followed by "Chapter I-Breaking the News." An excerpt from Longfellow's poem, "It Is Not Always May," is above the text.  The first letter from the text, M,  is larger the rest and in a fancy font.
