19DES_Collins_[1910]_00C_ed_web.jpg

This frontispiece, from the [1910] Collins' Clear-Type Press "The Challenge Series" Reprint, depicts the horse whipping scene. In this instance, John stands with authority in the foreground over Mr. Saunders, whom John has thrown from his horse. John, who stands as tall as his horse the Black Prince, wears a black suit and his clerical collar. Mr. Saunders' cane lies uselessly beside him. In the background, Ellen, wearing a blue dress, flees on the Brownie. There is a reference to page 372, from Chapter XXXVIII. The illustration is captioned "He hurled him quite over."
