This color aquatint frontispiece appearing in the [1918] Humphrey Milford/Oxford University Press Reprint, depicts Alice and Ellen on The Cat's Back. Alice and Ellen sit on a rock on The Cat's Back. Alice wears a bonnet, a dark blue dress and wraps her left arm around Ellen, and points into the distance with the right. Ellen wears a light blue dress and leans forward slightly to be able to see the village Alice is pointing out to her. Mountains rise up in the background of the illustration. The gentle, flowing colors of the aquatint illustration give a sense of lightness to the scene as the figures are surrounded by a nature that blends together through the colorful movement of the illustration.The name of the illustrator is written in the bottom right corner of the illustration, and a caption below the illustration reads, "You see that little white village yonder?"

These black and white illustrations, appearing as the frontispiece and title page vignette to volume 1 of the 1853 James Nisbet "Author's Edition" reprint, depicts Mr. Van Brunt tending his flock and Edinburgh. The frontispiece depicts Mr. Van Brunt tending his flock of sheep. Ellen stands among the sheep, looking happily at them as they stand around her. Mr. Van Brunt stands near her, throwing feed to the sheep from a bowl tucked under his arm. A fence extends down the left side of the illustration toward a large mountain in the background, over which looms a billowy cloud. The field where Mr. Van Brunt and Ellen stand is mostly bare except for several trees that stand near the mountain. The title page vignette depicts Edinburgh. The landscape captures the natural beauty of the hilly terrain, while also showing the large edifices and monuments known to that city, such as the Nelson Monument, which spires up into the sky. In the front center of the image are tourists gazing upon old Edinburgh. This pairing of an image depicting the American pastoral ideal and the largest city of Scotland contrasts the developing values of each country.

"New Edition" reprint, depicts Ellen riding Alice's horse, Sharp, as Alice walks alongside her on their way to Carra-carra. An open valley with several trees and mountains in the distance extends behind them. Ellen rides side-saddle and raises her finger as if she is speaking as Alice looks up at her. Alice's hair extends behind her as if being blown by the wind, establishing a sense of movement in the illustration.
