In the illustration, John is pushing Mr. Saunders by the shoulder into the gully and Ellen sits on her horse watching the scene unfold. A caption below the illustration reads, "And hurled him over the gully at the side of the road." The scene depicted in this illutration is on page 332 of the novel.
