In the background is a window looking out, with some foliage framing the scene and a table sits next to them with a basket of birds. Ellen is dressed in dark while her mother, looking down at her child, is dressed in light colors. It is entitled, "Ellen And Her Mother," and has the caption, "'Now, mamma, these birds are mine you know, and I give them to you. You must pay me a kiss for them, mamma they are worth that.'"
