This black and white illustration appears on page 254A of the [1890] Fredrick Warne & Co. Reprint Depicting Ellen reading to her silent grandmother, at the back of the kitchen stairs. The room is lighter, compared to the stairwell, and the two are swathed in light. Both are smiling, as Ellen reads aloud "The Joyful News" and Grandma knits.

This black and white illustration, appearing on page 118b of the [1890] Frederick Warne and Co. reprint, depicts Ellen and Nancy at the brook. Ellen sits next to the water with her hands in her lap as Nancy stands behind Ellen looking down at her. A line of trees extends across the background of the illustration and several bushes surround Ellen and Nancy. A caption below the illustration quotes a sentence from page 123 and reads, "'Look here, Nancy!' cried Ellen." The excitement conveyed in the caption is subdued by the stillness conveyed in the illustration as Ellen sits quietly by the brook.

In the title page of Frederick Warne and Co.'s 1890 edition of the novel, the title is printed in the top quarter of the page followed by a period. Both the author's name and pseudonym, Elizabeth Wetherell, are printed below, as well as a list of separate works. An inscription taken from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's, "To a Child," appears in the page's middle. An image of a horseshoe between two wings is printed below. Frederick Warne and Co.'s address is listed as, "London, Bedford Street, Strand."
