In the illustration, John and Ellen are sitting at a window seat. John is holding a book in one hand and raising his other arm while pointing, his lips are pursed as though he is in the middle of speaking, John's legs are crossed and her is leaning towards Ellen. Ellen has a book and her hands in her lap. She is looking at John her speaks.

Her expression is wistful as she contemplates and compares her new life with the Lindsay's with her life in America. This illustration first appeared on page 528, of the 1892 J. B. Lippincott Co.
