This is the first page of a series of advertisements at the back of the 1884 Frederick Warne & Co. "Star Series" Reprint.

The spreadsheet lists 103 reviews of The Wide, Wide World, published in various American periodicals from 1850-1859, and encodes the reviews by type and stance.

Research Method

Using Proquest’s American Periodicals database, I searched the phrase “wide wide world,” with the additional limiting dates of 1850-1859. I went through the 368 results, year by year, and collected reviews of Warner’s novel. I did not download reviews of other novels by Susan Warner unless the reviewers mentioned The Wide, Wide World for the sake of literary comparison (e.g., better or worse than Warner’s first novel) or when they touched on the quality of her authorship in a general sense. I ignored advertisements and lists of announcements. Essentially, if there were any sorts of value judgments about The Wide, Wide World or the quality of Warner’s writing, then I included the reviews (no matter how brief). The data set is iimited by the fact that it only documents reviews found in periodicals contained within American Periodicals.

This is the back advertisement in the [1853] Clarke, Beeton, & Co. Reprint, Version 1. This advertisement is ripped on the top left corner, obscuring much of the title and subtitle of the page. The first section of books listed are title which are priced at "ONE SHILLING EACH". These titles include "TABLE TURNING AND TABLE TALKING", "BEECHER'S LECTURES ON INTEMPERANCE", "TO YOUNG MEN ON THE VICES", "FERN LEAVES, FROM FANNY'S PORTFOLIO", "HISTORY OF THE CHINESE REVOLUTION", "THE CHRISTMAS STOCKING" by Miss Wetherell, and "MRS. CHISHOLM'S EMIGRANT'S GUIDE". Below are books which are priced at "EIGHTEENPENCE EACH" These titles include Southworth's "Curse of Clifton", "Christmas Evening Legends", and "Mark Sutherland", Cumming's "The Lamlighter", Dennys's "Alpha", Carey's "Clovernook", the Glenluna Family's "Dollars and Cents", "Fern Leaves, From Fanny's Portfolio", Denison's "Home Pictures", "Loves of an Apothecary", and Mathews's "Moneypenny". Below the book listings is the name and address of the publisher.

This is the back advertisement in volume 2 of the 1852 George P. Putnam 16th Edition, version 1. The books advertised on this page include: A Journey to Iceland by Charlotte Fenimore Cooper and A Book for a Corner by Leigh Hunt. It should be noted that the paper is foxing as well.

This is the back colophon of text in the 1853 H.G. Bohn "Standard Library" Reprint. On page 519, the text ends on the top fourth of the page. "The end." is written in the middle of the page, and "Bradbury and Evans, Printers, Whitefriars" is written on the bottom of the page.
