This black and white illustration depicts Ellen and Mrs. Van Brunt distraught over the prone body of Mr. Van Brunt, who broke his leg after falling through a trapdoor in the barn. A caption below the illustration reads, "Van Brunt's Accident," referencing the scene from page 373 of the novel. A bull(?) can be seen in the background of the barn. The name of the illustrator, Dalziel, is inscribed in the lower-left corner of the illustration.
