This illustration, appearing on page 128a of the Grosset and Dunlap reprint, depicts Ellen and Nancy at the brook. In the illustration, Ellen, wearing a dress and bonnet, stands unsteadily on a log as she reaches out toward Nancy, trying to regain her balance as she attempts to reach the other side of the brook. Nancy, who is turned away from the viewer, reaches out to Ellen as if to help her. Foliage surrounds Nancy and an open field extends behind Ellen into the distance. A caption below the illustration describes the scene from page 127 and reads, "Slowly and fearfully and with as much care as possible," conveying Ellen's anxiety as she attempts to cross the brook.
