Frontispiece to the [1896] James Nisbet & Co. Reprint Depicting Ellen Riding Sharp

This black and white illustration, appearing as the frontispiece to the [1896] James Nisbet & Co. reprint, depicts Ellen riding Alice's horse, Sharp, as Alice walks alongside her on their way to Carra-carra. An open valley with several trees and mountains in the distance extends behind them. Ellen rides side-saddle and raises her finger as if she is speaking as Alice looks up at her. Alice's hair extends behind her as if being blown by the wind, establishing a sense of movement in the illustration. This illustration first appeared in the 1853 James Nisbet and Co. "New Edition" (see 77CIA).

In the title page of James Nisbet & Co.'s 1896 edition of the novel, the title is printed in the page's top quarter followed by a period. The author's name is not included, rather represented by a mention of three separate works. An inscription taken from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem, "To a Child," appears in the page's middle. The novel is listed as an edition with illustrations. James Nisbet & Co.'s address is listed as, "London, 21, Berners Street."

This 4-color wood engraving, appearing on page 62a of the 1886 James Nisbet & Co. Golden Ladder Series reprint, depicts a ship on a rough sea. The illustration first appeared without color in James Nisbet's 1853 Author's Edition (see 3WIS). The caption to the image reads "Far From Home" with a reference to page 62. The image depicts a large ship crossing through a rough and foaming sea. However, the ship is heading towards a horizon of softer and brighter colors, representing a hopeful future ahead for the young passenger, Ellen Montgomery.
