This is the front pastedown and first page of front advertisements in the 1853 T. Nelson & Sons "Nelson's Library for Travellers and the Fireside" reprint. The entire page has a simple boarder around it with book ornaments in each corner. The page begins with the title "List of Works published by T. Nelson and Sons". The citites appear next, followed by the subtitle "and to be obtained by order of all booksellers". There isa zierrat with an unfilled diamond below, followed by the list of titles. These titles include:Ruins of Sacred and Historic Lands, The Reverend Bishop Russel's History of Egypt, and Palestine, Sir Leslie's Discovery and Adventure in the Polar Seas and Regions, The Seasons of the Year, and Professor Olmstead's The Mechanism of the Heavens. Each title has a short paragraph of description with it. Written at the top of the page is written "17" and "#319" in ink by a previous owner.

In the illustration, Alice is laying in bed, looking at John as leans over and places a hand on her as Ellen stands behind him, face in her hands. Mr. Humphreys and Margery stand by the door behind Ellen. A caption below the illustration reads, "He took away one of her hands from under her face." The scene depicted in this illustration is on page 370 of the novel.

This black and white illustration is a scene from page 328, of the 1896 Walter Scott, Ltd. Reprint. This is the horsewhipping scene. The two men, John and Mr. Saunder's are in a physical struggle. John, dressed in his reverend's black garb, is shoving the dandy Mr. Saunders toward the gully by the side of the road. Mr. Saunders is dressed much brighter, in striped pants, and light shirt and coat. Ellen is dressed darkly as well, sitting on her Brownie, as she watches on. The gully itself, looks treacherous with jagged rocks and thorny foliage to greet Mr. Saunder's when he falls in.

A caption below the illustration quotes a sentence from page 123 and reads, "Don't cry any more." In the illustration, Alice sits on a rock wearing a straw-brimmed hat and walking suit. She gazes down at Ellen and wraps her arm around her as Ellen kneels on the grass and leans into Alice to be consoled. The jagged mountain rises along the left side of the illustration and other mountains extend along the background. Several thin trees stand behind Alice and Ellen and a row of trees extends along the ridge of the mountain.
