This black and white illustration appearing on page 386, of the 1896 Hodder and Stoughton Reprint, depicts Mr. Van Brunt on the ground in a barn, injured, with Mrs. Van Brunt kneeling beside him, while Ellen enters the scene through the open barn door. Mrs. Van Brunt holds Mr. Van Brunt's hand to comfort him. In the right bottom corner of the illustration, a mother hen watches over her chicks.

This black and white illustration, appearing on page 375 of the 1896 Hodder and Stoughton reprint, depicts Ellen meeting The Brownie. Ellen stands next to Ellen Chauncey as Sophia Marshman watches Ellen from a distance. Thomas leads The Brownie to the front of the porch where Ellen can see him. Captain Parry, Alice's cat, stands near Ellen's feet. Several trees and bushes stand behind The Brownie, and an open field extends into the distance. The busyness in the foreground of the illustration, accentuated by the multiple characters appearing in the scene, is relieved by the landscape in the background as the scene opens up into nature.

This black and white illustration, appearing on page 337 of the Hodder and Stoughton reprint, depicts Ellen and Mr. Van Brunt in the woods. Ellen stands holding a basket among the trees and grass of the woods as Mr. Van Brunt leans against his ax in the background with several chopped pieces of wood sitting near his feet. His two oxen stand near him as he gazes at Ellen, who looks around her, seemingly in awe of the natural beauty of the woods as she rests her hand on her chest.

This black and white illustration appearing on page 325 of the 1896 Hodder and Stoughton Reprint, depicts Ellen standing in the greenhouse facing the gardener Mr. Hutchinson, who is holding a bouquet. Ellen is holding a basket and leaning slightly on a raised flower bed. Beneath the illustration, the caption reads "Ellen watched him as the bunch grew in his hand," from page 325 of the text. This illustration first appeared on page 38d of the second volume of the 1888 J.B. Lippincott & Co. edition (See 6CIA).

In this black and white in-text illustration appearing on page 312 of the 1896 Hodder and Stoughton reprint, depicts Ellen and John reading at the Marshman's. In the illustration, John and Ellen are sitting at a window seat. John is holding a book in one hand and raising his other arm while pointing, his lips are pursed as though he is in the middle of speaking, John's legs are crossed and her is leaning towards Ellen. Ellen has a book and her hands in her lap. She is looking at John her speaks.

This black and white in text illustration appearing on page 258 of the 1896 Hodder and Stoughton reprint, depicts the letter carrier appearing at the apple bee. In the illustration, Father Swaim sits in the middle of the crowd attending the apple bee, every one leaning in to look at the letter he is holding. Ellen sits to Father Swaim's right, lightly touching his arm and leaning in to look at the letter. Alice sits to Ellen's right in a chair, a bowl of apples sits next to her on the floor. Aunt Fortune is sanding to Father Swaim's left resting her hand on the back of his chair and looking the letter he is holding.

This black and white illustration appears on page 245 of the 1896 Hodder and Stoughton Reprint Depicting Ellen reading to grandma. In the illustration, Ellen and grandma are seated in front of the fire place. Ellen's chair is perpendicular in front of grandma's. Ellen is reading from a book sitting on her lap as grandma listens. An inscription below the illustration reads, "As soon as she was set free Ellen brought her the Bible." The scene depicted appears on page 245 of the novel.
