Ellen's hat sits near her feet and the ox cart can be seen in the background between Ellen and Mr. Van Brunt. The forest is dim and the trees appear somewhat twisted, bringing a sense of ominousness to the illustration.

A fence extends down the left side of the illustration toward a large mountain in the background, over which looms a billowy cloud. The field where Mr. Van Brunt and Ellen stand is mostly bare except for several trees that stand near the mountain.
