This 4-color wood engraving, appearing on page 378a of the 1886 James Nisbet edition, depicts Thomas handing Ellen a parcel in Aunt Fortune's Kitchen, while Aunt Fortune watches in the background. The illustration first appeared without color in James Nisbet's 1853 Author's Edition (see 3WIS). The parcel being delivered contains a copy of Pilgrim's Progress, which is intended to help spiritually guide Ellen.

This 4-color wood engraving, appearing on page 254a of the 1886 James Nisbet & Co. Golden Ladder Series edition, depicts Ellen reading to her grandma. The illustration first appeared without color in James Nisbet's 1853 Author's Edition (see 3WIS). The caption to the image reads "The Joyful News" with a reference to page 254. The image depicts Ellen sitting on a stool and reading to her elderly grandmother, further illustrating her meek and generous nature. The scene is set in Aunt Fortune's home, with warm, domestic colors.

This black and white illustration, appearing as the frontispiece to the [1896] James Nisbet & Co. reprint, depicts Ellen riding Alice's horse, Sharp, as Alice walks alongside her on their way to Carra-carra. An open valley with several trees and mountains in the distance extends behind them. Ellen rides side-saddle and raises her finger as if she is speaking as Alice looks up at her. Alice's hair extends behind her as if being blown by the wind, establishing a sense of movement in the illustration. This illustration first appeared in the 1853 James Nisbet and Co. "New Edition" (see 77CIA).
