In this lengthy two-part letter "Ellen's Ardent Admirer" gives his opinion on most of the principle characters. In his second letter he remarks on the American character Warner displays naturally through her characters.

In his fan letter to Susan Warner, Edward Campbell asks a question regarding the end of the novel. He also talks about the ways in which the novel excited his curiosity and brought him peace of mind.

Volume 2 of the 1851 George P. Putnam is covered with a blue leather grain embossed buckram (labeled Lea5 by the Library Company of Philadelphia). The front and back covers have an arabesque border. Both front and back panels have a publisher's mark, a scroll work "P." The title is gilt-stamped at the top of the spine; "Putnam" is gilt-stamped at the bottom edge of the spine.

This is the title page to the second volume of the 1851 George P. Putnam first edition, version three. The title is printed in the upper quarter of the page with a period. The author's name, Elizabeth Wetherell, is printed in the center of the page with a period, followed by an inscription taken from the Henry Wadsworth Longfellow poem, "To a Child." Volume II is printed below this inscription, and the address of George Putnam is listed as, "155 Broadway, New York."
