His two oxen stand near him as he gazes at Ellen, who looks around her, seemingly in awe of the natural beauty of the woods as she rests her hand on her chest.

In the illustration, Mr. Van Brunt and Ellen walk side by side as they enter the woods. Mr. Van Brunt holds an ax over his shoulder as he smiles down at Ellen. Ellen carries a basket over her arm and several flowers in her hand as she looks up at Mr. Van Brunt. They are surrounded by trees and other foliage. In the background are rolling hills with a small house set atop one of the hills.
