This black and white illustration, appearing on page 516a of the [1890] Frederick Warne and Co. reprint, depicts a ship on a rough sea. The illustration first appeared without color in James Nisbet's 1853 Author's Edition (see 3WIS). The image depicts a large ship on a dark, rough sea. The ship is heading towards the horizon as the sun rises. A caption below the illustration quotes a sentence from page 516 and reads, "The voyage was peaceful and prosperous," contrasting the roughness of the sea.

This black and white illustration appearing on page 483, of the 1896 Hodder and Stoughton reprint, depicts Ellen tending a garden in Scotland. In the illustration, Ellen stands leaning against a rake, her hand resting on a blooming branch. She looks away distractedly, and is wearing a gingham gown, a dark jacket, and plain straw brim hat. A tall fence stands behind her, blocking any view of the landscape beyond the tended garden. Several gardening pots and a watering can lie on the ground near Ellen's feet. This black and white illustration, appearing on page 426c of the [1885] Ward, Lock and Co. Home Treasure Library reprint, depicts Mr. Van Brunt tending his flock of sheep. A caption below the illustration quotes a sentence from page 427 and reads, "She went eagerly out of the door with Mr. Van Brunt to a new pleasure," and describes Ellen's excitement as she looks down at the sheep around her. Mr. Van Brunt stands near her, throwing feed to the sheep from a bowl tucked under his arm. A fence extends down the left side of the illustration toward a large mountain in the background, over which looms a billowy cloud. The field where Mr. Van Brunt and Ellen stand is mostly bare except for several trees that stand near the mountain.

This is the illustration on page 424a of the 1853 G. Routledge and Co. Reprint Depicting Ellen and John on the Cat's Back. A caption below the illustration reads "John finds Ellen on the Mountain," a reference to the scene after Alice's death appearing on page 424. In the illustration, John stoops down and wraps one arm around Ellen as she stands with her arms around his neck facing away from the viewer. They are surrounded by rocks and tall foliage, which frame their position on the mountain. Ellen's white dress stands out against John's black attire and the dark grey foliage behind them. The name of the illustrator, Dalziel, is inscribed in the lower-right corner of the illustration.

This black and white illustration, appearing on page 422 of the 1903 J. B. Lippincott Company "New Edition" reprint, depicts Mr. Van Brunt tending his flock. Mr. Van Brunt stands near a flock of sheep, tossing food to them from a plate he holds under his arm as Ellen stands nearby, watching the sheep. The sheep stand in an open field that extends toward a forest in the background of the illustration.

This black and white illustration appearing on page 422, of the 1892 J.B. Lippincott "New Edition", depicts Mr. Van Brunt tending the sheep on the farm while Ellen looks on. Ellen wears a sun dress, bonnet, and apron, while Mr. Van Brunt wears dark shoes, trousers with rolled cuffs, a gingham shirt and dark vest, and a straw hat.

This illustration, appearing on page 410a of the [1910] R. F. Fenno & Company reprint, depicts Ellen being approached by Mr. Saunders. A caption below the illustration quotes a sentence from page 411 and reads, "But, as she drew near, Mr. Saunders rose up, came to the middle of the road." In the illustration, Ellen sits on the Brownie and looks anxiously at Mr. Saunders, who stands on the side of the road, his back to the viewer, with his hand extending out toward Ellen. Mr. Saunders is surrounded by foliage and several trees stand in the background behind Ellen.

This black and white illustration, appearing on page 400a of the 1892 J. B. Lippincott Company "New Edition" reprint, depicts the horse whipping. Below the illustration a caption quotes a sentence from page 401 of the text and reads, "Ellen hardly saw how, it was so quick." In the illustration, Mr. Saunders lays in the grass next to the road after having been thrown by John, who stands tall, holding the reigns of his horse on the path. Ellen sits on her horse near John, looking back at the scene with uncertainty. Behind Ellen, an open field extends into the distance, framed by trees that stand near the path. Mountains can be seen in the background of the illustration.

This color illustration, appearing on page 394a of the 1887 James Nisbet & Co. "Golden Ladder Series Edition" reprint, depicts Ellen and the Brownie. A caption below the illustration reads, "The Talk to Brownie," describing a scene from page 394. The caption conveys the intimacy that is felt between Ellen and her horse. In the illustration, Ellen stands next to the Brownie, her hand on his mane, as she feeds him a handful of grass. The Brownie leans his head down to take the grass from her. The pair stand in a bright, open field as a cluster of trees stand on a hill behind them. The foreground is lined with small ferns and several sheep appear to be grazing near a mountain in the background.
