This black and white illustration, appearing as the frontispiece to the [1904] Ward, Lock, and Co. Limited "Complete Edition" reprint, depicts Alice finding Ellen on the Cat's Back. Ellen sits in the grass, laying across a rock, her hands pressed to her face, as Alice stands above her, leaning her hand against a rock as she looks down gently at Ellen. The outlines of several mountains rise up in the background and a budding branch reaches out over Ellen. A caption below the illustration quotes a sentence from page 117 and reads "Ellen was wrought up to the last pitch of grief," and conveys Ellen's despondency.

A caption below the illustration quotes a sentence from page 422 and reads, "Alice's head found its old place on her brother's shoulder." In the illustration, Alice and John sit on a bench, Alice resting her head on John's shoulder, and John clasping Alice's hand. A young girl, possibly Ellen, stands behind them, looking out at the hills that extend into the distance behind the pair. She gazes down at Ellen and wraps her arm around her as Ellen kneels on the grass and leans into Alice to be consoled. The jagged mountain rises along the left side of the illustration and other mountains extend along the background. Several thin trees stand behind Alice and Ellen and a row of trees extends along the ridge of the mountain.

A caption below the illustration quotes a sentence from page 411 and reads, "But, as she drew near, Mr. Saunders rose up, came to the middle of the road." In the illustration, Ellen sits on the Brownie and looks anxiously at Mr. Saunders, who stands on the side of the road, his back to the viewer, with his hand extending out toward Ellen. Mr. Saunders is surrounded by foliage and several trees stand in the background behind Ellen.
