A caption below the illustration quotes a sentence from page 123 and reads, "Don't cry any more." In the illustration, Alice sits on a rock wearing a straw-brimmed hat and walking suit. She gazes down at Ellen and wraps her arm around her as Ellen kneels on the grass and leans into Alice to be consoled. The jagged mountain rises along the left side of the illustration and other mountains extend along the background. Several thin trees stand behind Alice and Ellen and a row of trees extends along the ridge of the mountain.

This black and white illustration, found on page 456a of the [1907] Grosset & Dunlap reprint, depicts Ellen singing hymns to ease the grieving John and Mr. Humphreys. In the illustration, Ellen is sitting up straight and singing to the grieving John who is leaning against the mantel of the fireplace with a hand covering his face and Mr. Humphreys who is sitting with his eyes closed and listenting contently to Ellen's singing. Mr. Humphrey's and John are cast in shadow while Ellen is less harshly shaded at the forefront of the illustration.This illustration is shaded darker than the rest that appear in this edition. A caption below the illustration reads, "She sang clearly and sweetly as ever now." The scene depicted in this illustration is on page 456.

In the illustration, Alice is lying on her deathbed in white with flowers behind her shoulders and on her stomach. Ellen, dressed in black is kneeling at her bedside, one hand on her forehead in grief and flowers lay beside her on the floor. Margery is seen in the background, cast in shadow with her hands over her face. The scene depicted in this illustration appears on page 186 of the novel.
