This black and white illustration on page 497, of the 1892 J.B. Lippincott Co. "New Edition" reprint, depicts Ellen saying goodbye to Mr. Humphreys. In the illustration, Ellen is kneeling before a sitting Mr. Humphreys. They are clasping hands and Mr. Humphreys has his other hand on Ellen's shoulder and Ellen is resting a hand on his suit jacket.

This full-color illustration, found on page 466b of the [1907] Collins' Clear-Type Press reprint, depicts Ellen greeting grandmother Lindsay. In the illustration, Ellen is standing before grandmother Lindsay in a yellow dress and bonnet as grandmother Lindsay stretches out her arms for an embrace. A caption below the illustration reads, "Ellen sprang forward."

This black and white illustration on page 464b of the [1896] Walter Scott, Ltd. "Complete Edition" reprint, depicts Ellen reuniting with John in Scotland. In the illustration, Ellen and John are embracing in the foyer of a house while house guests are in the other room. A caption below the illustration reads, "Oh, John! My dear John! My dear brother!"

This is the illustration on page 456B of the 1853 H.G. Bohn Reprint, Version 1 depicting Ellen greeting her Grandmother Lindsay with an embrace. The two stand in the center of the room, a vanity and a chair in both corners. A portrait of a man hangs to the right of the illustration. Ellen is dressed in a light dress and is wearing a bonnet. Grandmother Lindsay is wearing a dark dress and a white cap. It is entitled, Ellen and Grandmama Lindsay.

This black and white illustration appearing on page 438, of the 1896 Hodder and Stoughton Reprint, depicts Alice's death bed, with Ellen weeping next to her. Alice's face is pale and serene, her eyes are open, and her right hand is lifted up as if to comfort Ellen. Ellen holds her left hand, while she covers her grief-stricken, shadowed face with her right hand. This illustration first appeared on page 438, of the 1892 J.B. Lippincott "New Edition", (see 9CIA).

This illustration, appearing on page 436a of the [1899] George Routledge and Sons edition, depicts Alice and Ellen holding hands as Alice tells Ellen that she is terminally ill. Alice sits with one arm wrapped around Ellen as Ellen stands next to her looking down sadly. A large cabinet stands behind the two . A caption below the illustration quotes a sentence from page 436 of the text and reads, "Alice held her and looked sadly for a minute into the woebegone little face, then clasped her close and kissed her again and again."

This is the illustration on page 424a of the 1853 G. Routledge and Co. Reprint Depicting Ellen and John on the Cat's Back. A caption below the illustration reads "John finds Ellen on the Mountain," a reference to the scene after Alice's death appearing on page 424. In the illustration, John stoops down and wraps one arm around Ellen as she stands with her arms around his neck facing away from the viewer. They are surrounded by rocks and tall foliage, which frame their position on the mountain. Ellen's white dress stands out against John's black attire and the dark grey foliage behind them. The name of the illustrator, Dalziel, is inscribed in the lower-right corner of the illustration.

This illustration, appearing on page 406a of the [1910] S.W. Partridge & Co., Ltd. edition, depicts Ellen being comforted by her Uncle Lindsay as her aunt, Lady Keith, and her grandmother watch from across the table. A caption below the illustration quotes a sentence from page 407 of the text and reads, "'Come, come, what is the matter Ellen?'" The room where Ellen and her Uncle Lindsay are pictured is very proper with a table strewn with silver tableware, a fireplace, and a large painting hanging on the wall. While Ellen's Uncle Lindsay seems eager to pull Ellen close to him to comfort her, Ellen, although leaning in, also appears to be resisting as she looks almost as though she could be pulling away from him. This ambiguity highlights the developing relationship between the two as Ellen loves her Uncle Lindsay but finds it difficult to conform to the demands he places on her.
