This is the frontispiece to the 1853 T. Nelson & Sons Reprint Depicting Ellen and Mamma holding each other in the parlor. It is a scene from page 43. In the background is a window looking out, with some foliage framing the scene and a table sits next to them with a basket of birds. Ellen is dressed in dark while her mother, looking down at her child, is dressed in light colors. It is entitled, "Ellen And Her Mother," and has the caption, "'Now, mamma, these birds are mine you know, and I give them to you. You must pay me a kiss for them, mamma they are worth that.'"

This black and white frontispiece is from the 1853 Nelson & Sons "Library for Travellers and the Fireside" Reprint. It depicts a scene from page 43, where Ellen and her mother are in the Parlour. Ellen's other sits in her chair, her daughter kneeling before. Behind them is a little table, facing an open window. On the table, is a basket of birds. The quote at the bottom of the image says, "Now, mamma, these birds are mine you know, and I give them to you. You must pay me a kiss for them, mamma; they are worth that.--Page 43.

This is the frontispiece to the 1853 H.G. Bohn Reprint, Version 1 depicting Ellen and Nancy at the brook. A caption below the illustration reads, "Crossing the Brook." In the illustration Ellen attempts to cross the brook, holding out her hand toward Nancy as if for stability. Nancy stands barefoot on the other side of the brook, leaning casually against a tree and holding her shoes. Ellen's white dress stands in contrast to Nancy's dark figure. A small waterfall cascades in the brook behind the pair, a small house stands atop a hill on the right side of the illustration, and a mountain rises up in the background.

This black and white illustration, appearing as the frontispiece to the 1853 G. P. Putnam & Company Illustrated Edition reprint, depicts Ellen walking in the woods. In the illustration, Ellen walks along a path through the woods carrying a basket of flowers over her arm. She smiles and pulls her jacket around her as her dress, hair, and hat are blown behind her, suggesting a gusting wind in the illustration. A small house can be seen nestled in the background and a mountain rises up behind it. The scene maintains a sense of openness despite the trees that line the path along the left side of the illustration.

At the far back of the Brook is a field, that is occupied by a herd of sheep and a scarecrow, and far in the background is a white house.

The illustration is dominated by foliage that extends along the sides, middle, and back of the image. A young girl or woman (possibly Ellen) stands leaning against a rock in the foreground near the small brook as several cattle graze nearby. In the background, a figure can be seen tending a flock of sheep (possibly Mr. Van Brunt). Behind the field where the sheep stand, a small house or cottage can be seen nestled against the tree line.

This black and white frontispiece to the [1950] University of London Press, Ltd. Abridged reprint, depicts Ellen arriving at Aunt Fortune's farm. In the illustration, Ellen's silhouette is standing at the door wearing a bonnet and dress. The fire in the chimney is the only light in the room, illuminating Aunt Fortune's frowning face as she faces Ellen at the door. Aunt Fortune is carrying a lamp in one and and a plate of flood in the other. The grandmother's silhouette is seen sitting in a chair in front of the fire.An inscription below the frontispiece reads, "Who are you? And what's wanting?" which quotes page 58 of the novel.

This is a full colored frontispiece of the 1928 Epworth Press Reprint. It depicts Ellen arriving in Thirlwall. She stands, her face and posture painted as unsure and afraid. She is wearing a white coat and bonnet, with a red ribbon, and a gray dress underneath. Her trunk is black and sits beside her, on the corner in front of an inn. To the left of the image are five painted out buildings, of similar colors of reds, pinks, browns and beiges. The sky in the background shows that the sun is going down, as the sky goes from blue to yellow to an orange-pink. At the bottom of the frontispice, typed in blue lettering, is a quote from the book, about the scene. "Then the feeling of strangeness and loneliness came over her, and her heart sank." A page number is not provided. Beneath this quote is the word (Frontispiece) in parenthesis. To the far right of the bottom of the page, are the letters W.W.

This color aquatint frontispiece appearing in the [1918] Humphrey Milford/Oxford University Press Reprint, depicts Alice and Ellen on The Cat's Back. Alice and Ellen sit on a rock on The Cat's Back. Alice wears a bonnet, a dark blue dress and wraps her left arm around Ellen, and points into the distance with the right. Ellen wears a light blue dress and leans forward slightly to be able to see the village Alice is pointing out to her. Mountains rise up in the background of the illustration. The gentle, flowing colors of the aquatint illustration give a sense of lightness to the scene as the figures are surrounded by a nature that blends together through the colorful movement of the illustration.The name of the illustrator is written in the bottom right corner of the illustration, and a caption below the illustration reads, "You see that little white village yonder?"
