This black and white illustration, appearing as the frontispiece to the 1853 G. Routledge & Co. reprint, depicts Ellen left alone at the door of the village inn, the “Star” of Thirwall, to meet her aunt. The stagecoach that left Ellen there can be seen driving away, carrying the maid Timmins who had cared for Ellen on her journey. A stranger, later identified as Sam, looms behind Ellen, sweeping the porch of the inn. A number of chickens and ducks wander in the street around Ellen. The caption below the illustration reads, "Ellen left at the door of the Village Inn," referencing the scene on page 81 of the novel, at the end of chapter VIII and the beginning of chapter IX. The name of the illustrator, Dalziel, is inscribed in the lower-right corner of the illustration.

This is the frontispiece of the 1853 G. Routledge and Co. Reprint Depicting Ellen arriving in Thirlwall. In this black and white illustration, Ellen is left standing at the front of the inn with her trunk on the ground behind her. She is surrounded by chickens and ducks, while the housekeeper is sweeping off the porch of the inn behind her. Ellen is staring at the coach that is leaving town, while the housekeeper is looking at her. The caption reads, "Ellen Left at the Door of the Village Inn. --P. 81. Front."

This is appearing as the frontispiece of the 1879 James Nisbet & Co. "Golden Ladder Series" Reprint depicts "the Pleasant Ride" The caption states "the Pleasent Ride." It shows Ellen riding Sharp, a white horse, with Alice walking next to her. They are in the woods. There is evidence of foxing on the page.

This illustration, appearing as the frontispiece to the 1880 J. B. Lippincott & Co. reprint, depicts Ellen and Nancy at the brook. In the illustration Ellen attempts to cross the brook, holding out her hand toward Nancy as if for stability. Nancy stands barefoot on the other side of the brook, leaning casually against a tree and holding her shoes. Ellen's white dress stands in contrast to Nancy's dark figure. A small waterfall cascades in the brook behind the pair, a small house stands atop a hill on the right side of the illustration, and a mountain rises up in the background.

This is the frontispiece to the [1853] Clarke, Beeton, & Co. Reprint, Version 1 Depicting Ellen reuniting with John in Scotland. The illustration is uncolored. There is an explanation of the illustration at the bottom of the page which reads "The meeting of Ellen and her brother John.-Page 429".

This black and white frontispiece of the 1867 Milner and Sowerby "Wide Wide World Library" Reprint depicts Ellen and Timmins arriving at the Inn, weary from their walk. The Dunscombes welcome them while also questioning these travelers.

This is the frontispiece to the [1874] William Nicholson & Sons, S.D. Ewins & Co. Reprint, depicting Ellen arriving at Alice's while she is making cakes. This colorful image depicts a scene from page 72, of Alice, Ellen and Margery, together in the kitchen. Alice is making cakes when Ellen arrives, while Margery sits over by the fire, behind the table. Alice holds a lantern over her head, looking down at Ellen, holding a plate of cakes. Ellen is dressed in her outer wear of the time period.

This black and white frontispiece is from the 1878 Milner & Co. Reprint. It depicts Ellen and Mr. Lindsay at Holyrood House. The ruins of the house are decayed and crumbling behind the two characters. Ellen and Lindsay are dressed in dark traveling clothes. Ellen is wearing a straw hat with a large plum on it. Mr. Lindsay is wearing a top hat and dark jacket and is carrying an umbrella.

This black and white frontispiece is from the 1879 Milner & Sowerby Reprint. It depicts Ellen's "friend", George Marshman, and Ellen together on the deck of the steamboat. Ellen is sitting on a bench, her ankles crossed and her hands clasped in her lap. Ellen has her head turned toward the lake with a forlorn face. George Marshman is standing, looking down at her, as he flips through his hymn book, reading it to give her comfort.
