This frontispiece, from the [1910] Collins' Clear-Type Press "The Challenge Series" Reprint, depicts the horse whipping scene. In this instance, John stands with authority in the foreground over Mr. Saunders, whom John has thrown from his horse. John, who stands as tall as his horse the Black Prince, wears a black suit and his clerical collar. Mr. Saunders' cane lies uselessly beside him. In the background, Ellen, wearing a blue dress, flees on the Brownie. There is a reference to page 372, from Chapter XXXVIII. The illustration is captioned "He hurled him quite over."

Ellen sits on her horse, the Brownie, watching fearfully from a distance, as John stands on a dirt road with his fists clenched over the frightened Mr. Saunders, who lays in the gulley, his arm raised over his head in an act of defense. A caption below the illustration quotes a sentence from page 373 of the text and reads, "John hurled him into the gulley at the side of the road." John's formal attire, menacing facial features, and erect stature emphasizes his height, while the common clothing, defensive position, and frightened facial features act to highlight the inferiority of Mr. Saunders.

She is wearing a white coat and bonnet, with a red ribbon, and a gray dress underneath. Her trunk is black and sits beside her, on the corner in front of an inn. To the left of the image are five painted out buildings, of similar colors of reds, pinks, browns and beiges. The sky in the background shows that the sun is going down, as the sky goes from blue to yellow to an orange-pink. At the bottom of the frontispice, typed in blue lettering, is a quote from the book, about the scene. "Then the feeling of strangeness and loneliness came over her, and her heart sank."
