This illustration, appearing on page 16a of the [1910] S.W. Partridge & Co., Ltd. edition, depicts Ellen's mother selling her ring in order to buy supplies for Ellen's approaching journey to the Hudson River Valley. Ellen's mother holds out her ring to a man who looks at the piece of jewelry distastefully as Ellen stands next to her mother watching the exchange. A caption below the illustration quotes a sentence from page 17 of the text and reads, "Her first feeling was of dazzled wonderment," and describes Ellen's emotions upon seeing her mother sell her favorite ring. The store room contains a cabinet full of tableware and a glass countertop covering rows of jewelry. Ellen's mother's dress is somewhat ornate and includes a feathered hat and long shawl. Her face looks haggard, emphasizing her illness, and providing contrast to her genteel attire.

An illustration from volume two of the 1853 Nisbet, Hamilton, Adams & Co. "New Reprint", page 174b. A black and white image, with little shading, depicts Ellen and Anthony Fox exchange a note, while Margery looks on, carrying a large basin in the kitchen. Anthony Fox has taken off his hat, it seems in deference to Ellen.

This is the illustration on page 178b of the 1853 H.G. Bohn reprint, Version 1 depicting Mr. Vant Brunt finding Ellen and Alice in the snowstorm. A caption below the illustration reads, "The Snow Storm." In the illustration, Mr. Van Brunt leans against a snow-covered fence holding up a lantern as Alice and Ellen approach. Alice looks at the lantern warily as Ellen reaches out toward Mr. Van Brunt. A bare tree extends over Alice and Ellen.

An illustration from volume two of the 1853 James Nisbet, Hamilton, Adams & co. "New Edition" Reprint, on page 178b. This image depicts Ellen, sitting on a stool at the feet of Mrs. Blockson, reading to her behin the stairs. The picture is light, with shading around the back staircase. Mrs. Blockson is crouch in her little chair, listening to Ellen read.

This black and white illustration, appearing on page 182b of the 1853 James Nisbet and Co. "New Edition" reprint, depicts Ellen riding Alice's horse, Sharp, as Alice walks alongside her on their way to Carra-carra. An open valley with several trees and mountains in the distance extends behind them. Ellen rides side-saddle and raises her finger as if she is speaking as Alice looks up at her. Alice's hair extends behind her as if being blown by the wind, establishing a sense of movement in the illustration.

This illustration, appearing on page 184a of the [1904] Grosset & Dunlap reprint, depicts Ellen riding Alice's horse, Sharp, as Alice walks alongside on their way to Carra-carra. A caption below the illustration describes the scene from page 184 and reads, "Ellen's first ride on horseback." A hill covered in trees rises behind the pair as the path extends behind them. Ellen rides side-saddle as she looks down at Sharp. Alice, wearing a long dress and bonnet, looks at Ellen and places her hand on her dress as if to steady her. Ellen's hair flows behind her and Sharp stands with his front leg raised, giving a sense of movement to the illustration.

This black and white illustration appearing on Page 186d of Volume Two of the 1853 G.P. Putnam & Co. Illustrated Edition Reprint, depicts Ellen grieving at Alice's deathbed. In the illustration, Alice is lying on her deathbed in white with flowers behind her shoulders and on her stomach. Ellen, dressed in black is kneeling at her bedside, one hand on her forehead in grief and flowers lay beside her on the floor. Margery is seen in the background, cast in shadow with her hands over her face. The scene depicted in this illustration appears on page 186 of the novel.

This black and white illustration on page 188 of the J.B. Lippincott Co. "New Edition" reprint depicts Mrs. Vawse spinning with a spinning wheel.
