This illustration, appearing as the frontispiece to the 1871 J. B. Lippincott & Co. "New Edition" reprint, depicts Ellen and Nancy at the brook. In the illustration Ellen attempts to cross the brook as her bonnet flows behind her, holding out her hand toward Nancy as if for stability. Nancy stands barefoot on the other side of the brook, leaning casually against a tree and holding her shoes. Ellen's white dress stands in contrast to Nancy's dark figure. A small waterfall cascades in the brook behind the pair, a small house stands atop a hill on the right side of the illustration, and a mountain rises up in the background.
