Below the illustration a caption quotes a sentence from page 401 of the text and reads, "Ellen hardly saw how, it was so quick." In the illustration, Mr. Saunders lays in the grass next to the road after having been thrown by John, who stands tall, holding the reigns of his horse on the path. Ellen sits on her horse near John, looking back at the scene with uncertainty. Behind Ellen, an open field extends into the distance, framed by trees that stand near the path. Mountains can be seen in the background of the illustration.

Lippincott & Co. edition, depicts Ellen standing in the greenhouse facing the gardener Mr. Hutchinson, who is holding a bouquet. Ellen is holding a basket and leaning slightly on a raised flower bed. Beneath the illustration, in a cursive script, is the name of the artist, Frederick Dielman, and the line "Ellen watched him as the bunch grew in his hand," from page 38 of the text. At the very bottom of the page, in the same script, is the title of the book along with the volume and page number.

This illustration, appearing on page 388b of the [1899] George Routledge and Sons edition, depicts Aunt Fortune holding a bean pole as she chases her bull, Timothy. She stands among several waist-high bushes as Ellen watches her from behind the plants. Aunt Fortune is dressed in a yellow and brown dress and leans forward as if to charge toward the bull. There is a caption below the illustration from page 389 which reads, "Miss Fortune, however, feared the face of neither man nor beast. She pulled up a bean pole and made such a show of fight, that Timothy, after look at her a little, fairly turned tail."
